Making Pottery at Porch Pottery / by Christian Hernandez

I had been wanting to take a pottery class for a while, so before I moved back to Florida, I purchased a Groupon for a 2-hour pottery class that included making pottery on a wheel. The Groupon was for 4 people, so it was perfect for my family and I. The only time I had done anything with pottery was in 5th grade and I don't remember a lot of it, so I thought why not try it out for fun?

I made our appointment and when the day came, we arrived at Porch Pottery. We were greeted by Joel, one of the assistants. He was extremely helpful in getting us situated and explaining all of the details we needed to know. He was instrumental in teaching us what to do and being hands-on in helping us form our clay on the wheels.

We each made our own bowls.

After about 1 hour on the wheel, we moved on to the next portion of our class - painting/decorating ceramics. They had some pre-made cups made from clay that we got to pick from and our job was to decorate them. They had various paints, stencils, tools, and molds for us to use and it was up to our creativity from there.

After decorating, we were finished! Their next step would be to color the bowls we created on the wheels (we decorated the cups), and then fire the bowls and cups in the kiln. Our 2 pieces would be available for pick-up around 6-8 weeks later and were included in the Groupon!

Cassie (the owner) and Joel were kind and helpful, which made our experience enjoyable and fun.
