This year, one of my goals has been to get into Wedding Photography. A friend of mine from graduate school contracted me earlier this year to photograph her wedding in late October and I knew I needed to learn somehow to provide her a positive wedding photography experience.
So far, I’ve assisted at about 10+ weddings in hopes of being a sponge and learn everything I can. I can confidently say I have learned a ton about posing, lighting, what kind of photographs to get, following timelines, collaborating with planners and vendors, and where to place myself at each step of the way.
On this day, I had the opportunity to second-shoot a traditional Bosnian wedding. Although it had familiar elements I’d seen before of a wedding ceremony, there were several traditions I had never seen before. One of which was their tradition to give servers (their own family members) large amounts of money for coffee.
The bride and groom got ready in separate houses - I got the opportunity to photograph the groom’s process. And upon getting ready, the groom made his way to the bride’s location for a family brunch. After, the brunch, the bride, groom, and close family would head to the groom’s house for an intimate in-home ceremony. Afterward, they would head to an event venue for a more public ceremony with family and friends.
It was amazing to experience a culture and tradition that was new to me, as well as to continue photographing, learning, and being a part of people’s stories.
