Belkys and Nelson - Couple's Photoshoot in Central Park / by Christian Hernandez

In April 2017, one of my co-workers (Belkys) asked me if I would be able to take some couples photos of her and her husband. I said of course! We scheduled a date in May and met up in Central Park in New York City.

I met her husband Nelson for the first time that day. The shoot was flawless. They were naturally being affectionate and giving the best poses, which translates excellently for the photos.

After the shoot, Nelson insisted I come to dinner with them, so we went to a latin restaurant called “El Malecon” in the Bronx. The food was delicious and we shared some great conversation and time over a good meal.

In August of that year, just 3 months after our shoot, Nelson passed away from a heart attack unexpectedly.

I’m glad I had the opportunity to meet him and share a meal with him and Belkys. He was kind, relaxed, chill, and a cool guy. Knowledgeable and humble. He was the kind of guy that you could talk to for 2 minutes and would make you feel so comfortable as though you knew him for years. Throughout the time we spent in Central Park taking portraits, I got to witness the love he expressed to his wife and the way he listened and encouraged her, and that was inspiring.

I’m glad I was able to leave Belkys with some images - reminders of happier times she spent with her husband.

Here are some of the shots I captured.
